My impression is that it's a little bit more arcadey than AC, but still definitely in the sim segment. Project CARS Is coming out next year sometime in Q2 (I think). I'm going to get it, because the devs have shown themselves to be doing early access properly, and I want to support them (Also laser scanning the 'Ring can't be cheap, and it'll be decent content).
There's a DLC pack coming soon, with the full Nordschleife laser-scanned into the game, along with some more cars. I'm having a lot of fun just lapping tracks and trying to get better. It's a fairly serious sim game with a reasonably small car list, but with huge variation in cars (all the way from a Fiat 500 Abarth to some mental F1 cars like the Lotus 98T). OR support is being added/updated now as well. There's also a fairly serious modding scene.
